2576 Gazelle Enterprises Become New Engine for Innovation Development in National High-tech Zone

On November 3, 2017, Torch Center of the Ministry of Science & Technology and Great Wall Enterprise Institute ( GEI ) jointly released the "Gazelle Enterprise Development Report 2017 for National Hi-tech Zone" in Beijing.

"Gazelle Enterprise" refers to enterprises that have entered the high-growth stage after the start-up phase. They have the characteristics of rapid growth, strong innovation ability, new professionality and great potential of development. Since the 1990s the United States put forward the concept "Gazelle Enterprise", which has drawn much attention onto such enterprises. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) keeps track of the growth of gazelle enterprises and high-growth enterprises in their report ”Entrepreneurship at a Glance”.

GEI continuously studies and promotes cultivation on gazelle enterprise. Since 2014, the Torch Center and GEI have jointly researched and compiled the "Report on the Development of Gazelle Enterprises in the National Hi-tech Zone". This is the third time of public reports of this series.

The results show that the number of gazelle enterprises in Hi-tech Zone has risen sharply and make outstanding contributions to the local economic growth. Gazelle enterprises have led the Innovation and entrepreneurship in Hi-tech Zone with a high level of input and output in scientific and technological activities, also have become a barometer and a new engine of the regional economic development in the Hi-tech Zone.

Number of gazelle enterprises increased significantly. In 2016, the number reached to 2576, an increase of 491 from the previous year, and the overall rate of gazelle enterprises in the high-tech zone reached to 2.75%.

Gazelle enterprises have made outstanding contributions to the economic growth of Hi-tech Zone. In 2016, the gazelle enterprises accounted for 2.75% of the total number of enterprises in high-tech zones and contributed 28% of the total revenue in the area. The growth rate of business income of the gazelle enterprises is 8 times of the overall operating revenue in high-tech zones. Gazelle enterprises has become important force in high-tech zones to promote economic development.

Gazelle enterprises, with a high level of scientific and technological input and output, are leading innovation and development in high-tech zones. In 2016, the investment of gazelle enterprises in science and technology activities was 6.2%, while the revenue from technology and high-tech products accounted for 29% and 45% of the total revenue respectively.

Gazelle enterprises open up the technical export, and actively layout the international market. In 2016, the total export of technical services by gazelle enterprises increased by 74.8% over the same period of last year; the year-on-year growth rate of overseas registered trademarks was 337.9% and a compound annual growth rate was 189.9% over three years; the number of gazelle enterprise applied for the European, American and Japanese patents in 2016 were significantly increased.

High-tech zones with good Innovation and entrepreneurship atmosphere become gazelle enterprises’ gathering area. Gazelle enterprises are distributed in 132 state high-tech zones. Among them, the top ten zones were Zhongguancun, with 650 gazelle enterprises, Shanghai Zhangjiang 271, Shenzhen 117, Guangzhou 111, Suzhou Industrial Park 82, Hangzhou 74, Wuhan East Lake 73, Xi'an 56, Chengdu 55, Tianjin 54. The number of gazelle enterprises in these ten hi-tech zones accounted for half of the total amount in China. In addition, Xiamen, Chongqing, Changsha, Jinan, Wuxi, Hefei, Nanjing, Dongguan, Foshan and other high-tech zones are also quite attractive towards gazelle enterprises, these cities are listed into the top 20.
